Calamari Batter Fry

Squid is a popular food in many parts of the world. Calamari is a culinary name for squid. Every country and region having its own recipes. Calamari often served as a snack or  starter.

In India squid or calamari is mostly eaten in coastal areas, in Kerala and Tamilnadu . Squid are eaten deep fried or as squid gravy.

My first experience with calamari dish was in coastal region of Kerala at Kovalam. My husband love to taste new dishes, sometime I was very skeptical about that. He always encourage me not only to taste new dish but try to cook it in home.Here in USA I got clean frozen squid and gave a try. For me a new seafood dish Calamari Batter Fry.



Ingredients-

1/2 lb squid body

2 tsp garlic paste

1/2 tsp lemon juice

1 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup corn flour

1/2 tsp red chili powder

1 tbsp black pepper powder

1 tbsp olive oil

Salt to taste

Vegetable oil for frying


Method-

Wash squid body thoroughly, drain excess water and pat dry. Cut  into 1/4 inch rings. In a bowl add garlic paste,lime juice,salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper, salt mix well. Add squid rings and coat it nicely.Marinate for minimum 30 minutes.

In  a bowl add 1/2 cup of all purpose flour, 1/2 cup of corn flour, olive oil, salt and black pepper, red chili powder. Mix well and add water slowly to make a smooth batter. Keep aside for 15 minutes.

Heat oil in a deep frying pan. In a shallow tray spread remaining all purpose flour. Dip squid rings in flour, then coat it with batter. Fry squid in hot oil until deep brown for 2 minutes. Place in a paper towel.

Serve with french onion dip and fresh lemon edges.
